Communicating our green responsibility

Furniture is our core business, but our green responsibility is not limited

to just design and production. We are constantly striving to improve the

sustainability of our business.

Below, we highlight some of the key initiatives and results in our efforts

to achieve this.

Dear customer & business partner,

As a result of our Danish heritage and global responsibility, we have a major responsibility

to the environment. The first lecture on ecology was in fact given by Danish Professor

Eugen Warming at the University of Copenhagen around 1895.

Today, Denmark is a leader in environmentally friendly technologies, whether it be energy,

reuse etc., and Tvilum-Scanbirk also aims to be such a leader.

We develop furniture for private and commercial purposes all over the world. And as one

of Europe’s biggest furniture manufacturers, we have a responsibility to ensure the

sustainability of our operations and to constantly improve our ‘green footprint’.

We have a strong focus on the environmental impact of our operations and always strive

to reduce this impact. We meet all relevant requirements and standards and are constantly

striving to improve on and surpass them wherever possible.

As part of Masco Corporation, we have an excellent foundation on which to create and

document improvements.

This page will hopefully give you an overview of what we are doing for the environment

and the direction we are heading. This is not a goal in itself, but rather a journey on

which we have set out, and we want to improve continually – which is something we

hope you will appreciate.

Kind regards,

Lau Frandsen

CEO

Based on surplus timber

Chipboard mainly comes from offcuts and wood chippings from sawmills, timber from thinned

forests and waste timber from furniture production.

Wood from controlled sources

The chipboard we use in our production processes is carefully selected and nothing comes

from sensitive areas. In all newly launched series produced after 1 August 2008, we use only

PEFC-certified wood, enabling us to trace its origin. We are working with our suppliers to

establish traceability for the rest, and our goal is thus only to use PEFC-certified wood after

1 January 2009.

Certified production

Our production is certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) standards.

CE-marked chipboard

All Tvilum-Scanbirk chipboard is CE-marked. In all productions after 1 August 2008,

we have succeeded in reducing emissions by 50% in compliance with the statutory

E1 standard, which means that we are much closer to the natural content of the

wood.

Indoor climate

Our Jubee and Mixi children’s furniture ranges were the first furniture ranges

to be certified in accordance with the Danish Indoor Climate label. More have

followed since, and from 2008 all our new ranges will be certified before they

are put into production.

Recycled packaging

98% of our packaging consists of recycled materials, which can also be reused.

Efficient transport

All our furniture is self-assembly, which is more energy-efficient to transport than

preassembled furniture. All chipboard from foreign producers is delivered by rail.

Strict requirements for suppliers

All Tvilum-Scanbirk suppliers must comply with our Code of Conduct to verify that they do not

use dangerous materials, live up to their social responsibility etc. Our suppliers are audited in

accordance with this Code of Conduct.

We strive to minimise the environmental impact of our operations.

Waste will be reduced wherever possible, e.g. by optimising cutting profiles in chipboard.

All surplus wood from production is reused in new chipboard or used for heating our offices

and factories.

Taking care of the environment is everyone’s responsibility, and here at Tvilum-Scanbirk we are

striving to improve at every level.
